You have too much faith in Dictionaries.. They are only a guide to usage; the 
advice they give is not set in stone. 
 I made it clear that the reference was to the sequence of stages from 
student to teacher to student and so on. This is a perfectly legitimate use of 
'generation'. even if metaphorically.
The reference you quote was to the 'average' time for a generation from 
parent to offspring and s on. Peter Marshall and I have a photographer friend who 
is a great grandfather at 60. I think that he was at the Steinbock lecture as 
well   
Maybe he managed to be a great grandfather that young by not taking up gum 
printing
