Yes. I am not familiar with the HP but use an 720dpi Epson in a diffusion
dot
halftone mode very successfully. The dots are difficult to distinguish for
Gums
and some other alternative processes when printed on rough surface papers.
The advantages are:
	The tonal range can be scaled to match the process,
 	It is very easy to make color seps for tricolor gum printing
	You can print a long scale picture in gum in one pass.
I don't make a negative on the printer because I find that the contrast is
not
good enough to print with. I print a positive on transparency film and then
make my negative by contact printing onto ortho film..

No its not. The HP printer in halftone mode will print only 64 tones
between black and
white, much less then the smooth tonality of any continuous film.
