I've found "Real World Photoshop" by David Blatner and Bruce Fraser to be an
excellent book. The chapters on "Digital Darkroom", "Sharpening" and "Tonal
Correction" are especially relevant for digital monochrome printing.

which will provide you with a sample of his Photoshop related themes.

Julieanne Kost has created several CDs illustrating basic and advanced
Photoshop techniques which I think are well done and instructive.
