Better is not a decision item for large scale mfg processes. Rather than better think "good enough". Such things are decided on whether something is good enough so that the complaints are acceptably low and can be used to make an acceptable profit. Another important consideration is the inertia represented by the investment in process infrastructure devoted to old ways. In this context, better is a buyer's/user's criterion provided the choice exists in the accessible markets.

Very small scale or individual processes are decided through very different considerations. Sometimes the choice of path to follow depends on differences in outcomes that can only be detected or measured by a single person and no one else. See, for example, this list.

Don't confuse the two.

Why,do you think,companies like KODAK,ILFORD, AGFA and FUJI still use
gelatin for their films instead of PVA,acrylic,starch etc if that would be
better ?
