Assuming you expect to do several coats, I'd suggest washing well in hot
water before anything -- will shrink & remove any whatever already on it.
Then you'd want to iron it smooth (or stretch) and..... If it were my
project I'd try a couple of coats of rather thin gelatin (maybe 2%) to
soak into the fabric, and then harden (alum or glyoxal).

I suspect though you'll have to feel your way, trying variations after
seeing success or failure. I don't suggest a gesso size because (a) it
hides the fabric which is the point in the first place, and (b) in my
experience gum print on gesso is at best crude.

I'll add however that I've seen some student projects that were potential
on a *smooth* fabric, seemed less so on coarse fabric...
