I don't see any reason for you to have to jump through that many hoops to
get the negative you want. What film stock are you using?  Tri-X and HC110
is a particularly good combination.  What developing time are you using?
Dilution B seems to work up to about ten minutes before you just start to
add more base fog.  When HC110 doesn't give enopugh contrast (it should)
go to D-11, then D-19, then D-8, in order of increasing contrast.
