print study at MOMA
I had the pleasure of meeting a young woman named Whitney (didn't get a last name) who works at the Museum of Modern Art photography dept there and handles their photography study room. They are open to visitors from 2 to 5 each Mon. and Wed. Appointments can be made at: photography_studycenter@moma.org. MOMA's web site indicates that a student or University ID must be shown to get into the study room but that was not my experience. I inquired about gum prints and on my arrival found a box of prints from the early 1900's waiting for me. She had printed out a list of everything in the study collection that came up on a search with the word gum. These were not the famous prints but a good selection of average work my several familiar photographers of that era. I don't have the notes I took with me now and will provide more info later. But, I found it very interesting to handle the paper used back then. Several of Kuhn's prints were on a light brown Japanese paper. I am not terribly expert on these papers but have samples somewhere here and will see if I can't identify what I saw (from memory). Has anyone on the list printed gum on Japanese papers? How does one cope with the wrinkling when coating? Coat it damp? Jack
